A New Mentorship Initiative for Durham’s Black Youth

At the Centre for Homeownership & Economic Development (CHOEDC), we’re excited to announce our newest initiative in partnership with Downtown Durham Library. Project TRIUMPH brings dedicated mentoring to Black teens and young adults in our community, creating spaces for growth, connection, and empowerment.

Community-Driven Mentorship at the Heart of Durham

As an organization deeply rooted in Durham’s community development, we’ve seen firsthand how meaningful mentorship can transform lives. That’s why we’ve designed Project TRIUMPH to foster genuine connections, practical guidance, and a chance to explore their potential in a supportive environment between our community’s youth and mentors who understand their journey. Every third Tuesday, we gather in the Downtown Durham Library’s MakerLab, where our mentors guide conversations about financial literacy, personal development, and building healthy relationships through fun and interactive activities.

What Makes Project TRIUMPH Different

What makes these sessions unique is the genuine relationship-building at their core. While we’ll explore topics like social media navigation and financial literacy, these subjects serve as springboards for deeper conversations and lasting mentorship connections. Our mentors aren’t just presenters – they’re community members committed to walking alongside our teens as they chart their paths forward.

Virtual Mentoring: Breaking Down Barriers to Access

Understanding that accessibility is key, we’ve expanded Project TRIUMPH to include virtual mentoring sessions. These monthly Zoom meetings offer the same quality guidance and support for those who can’t join us at the library, ensuring every young person has the opportunity to connect with a mentor who can help them navigate their path forward.
